"I can hardly believe the hunt is over already! I anticipate this hunt beginning in December and it is just a flash. This was my tenth year with Magnum and although the hunt was the toughest one to date, I managed to get two beautiful huge gobblers, one 20 lbs and the second one 19 lbs+. The hunt went well even though the jakes ruled the woods. I can't wait until next year as the 2 year olds will be going nuts! You two always manage to make it all worthwhile. At the Jones Lodge; Rick, Steve and Greg were each doing their utmost to get everyone into birds. I had the privilege of hunting with Rick this year and we had a "hoot" as usual. Thanks again for providing me with a fantastic experience. You will always have my business. Best wishes for the rest of this year and have a super summer. See you guys next Spring!"
Dan Flynn, PA
"Just wanted to say thanks again for a great time and a great trip, we really appreciated our first trip to Texas. It was a special time for Ethan and I as a father/son, thanks for making it even more memorable!! I also appreciated the awards ceremony, I have hunted all over the world and and have never seen that done, the power of a ceremony is absolutely huge. It's all Ethan could talk about on the way home. You definitely run the best camp I have ever seen, thanks again, we really appreciated it. Hopefully, we can sneak back down next year and hunt again, thanks very much."
Shay McGowan, NE
"Thanks for the great time. As usual, I enjoyed it immensely and it was nice to have Carol there to see everything that I've been talking about for years! Thanks Jim, for getting her onto a turkey. She didn't particularly think she wanted to when we were talking about the trip, but she really enjoyed it. Thanks again for everything."
Jay & Carol Gilchrist, MD
"Hope things are going well in Texas - I sure had a great time! Thanks for the good hunt and hospitality. Yall seem like family, your guides are good guys. I have guided deer, bear, waterfowl and turkey and your guys get along very well! Have a great week and God Bless!"
Jay Adcock, NC
"Just a note to thank you for another wonderful three bird hunt with Magnum Guide Service. This marks my 7th year with Magnum bringing my total to 22 longbeards. Who else could deliver such a record breaking performance? I'm not talking about me! I'm talking about you Jim! You, your lovely wife Melony and your talented guides including my favorites J.P. and Glenn. No one works harder to put clients on birds
than the guides at Magnum. Here's my story:
Bird #1. KABOOM! MISS! Like Tiger Woods whiffing a gimmee, I choked royally. But, I have an explanation: It was the second day and I was still bird-less. Almost unbelievable at the Finklea. I drifted off resulting in the most attractive turkey calling technique of all: snoring. Trust me
dude, it works EVERY TIME. I awoke to see THREE HUGE, DRAPERY TASSEL LONG BEARDS walking by so very tall, twitchy and very, very nervous. When I say these birds were BIG I mean they were SCARY BIG! So tall and black and shiny with thick, long, sand draggin' ropes. My brain overloaded with visions of grandeur. I tried to line up two heads and score two kills with one shot! I imagined my triumphant arrival back at camp when I pulled
up with not one, but two big Toms. Perfectly legal in Texas. Anyway, the birds jigged, I jagged and BAM two ran off and one flew, all unscathed. My pellets hit the sand harmlessly as I stared in disbelief. Oh, the agony of defeat! Not long after my embarrassing miss J.P. and a Suburban of fellow hunters pulled in to check on me and bring me a sandwich and just a couple of my favorite, ice cold beverages. Normally, J.P. may have lectured me after such a miss (get serious...quit goofing around!) but he could see my obvious disappointment - for me and everybody else. It was a tougher hunt and to blow such an opportunity...well...I just felt awful.
Bird #2. I mean Bird #1. After 12 HOURS in my blind staring through little holes in the clipped brush you begin to hallucinate. But, at 6:30 p.m. one very real Texas Tom strolled by just like the three hours earlier. He too was big, tall and twitchy - ready to bolt. This time, I did what I should have done last time: KABOOM! What a bird! 22lbs, 10 inch beard and long, curved, limb hangin' hooks! I pulled him in my blind and kept hunting until J.P. picked me up. The pressure was off.
Bird #2: For the first time in years I was hunting the final morning. Normally, I'm tagged out and sleeping in! The evening before, while scouting this enormous ranch, Glenn found a new roost never hunted by a Magnum hunter. At first, I didn't want to be the guinea pig at a new spot, but Glenn insisted he saw lots of sign and a well traveled path to food and water. I should never had doubted him! Glenn calls in turkeys with a nail and a rock! True. Ask J.P. So, I built a blind and settled in. A nice blind with a double master suite! At about 8:30 a.m. two ostrich sized Toms strolled by right where Glenn said they'd be. I maybe shoulda, coulda tried to bag two with one shot, but after the previous day's debacle, I aimed where meat meets feathers and BAM! And this bird was even BIGGER: 25lbs with impressive 1 1/2 inch spurs and a big meat head. He was so heavy! When Glenn and J.P. picked me up, Glenn said he thought he heard two shots from my direction. Must have been a back-fire from a passing work truck or a slamming bump gate. Or maybe Glenn's hearing isn't what it used to be. Couldn't have been me Jim. Uh uh. Like Tiger Woods, I never miss! So, that's how I ended my Magnum hunt: two, huge, meat head, limb hangin', ground draggin, trophy long beards and another year of fond memories. Lord willing...I'll be there next year."

ATTENTION: PLEASE! Anyone reading this testimonial --if you are not
sure about hunting with Magnum just give me a call. I'll gurantee you
Magnum will do everything possible to help you bag that tom your looking
for. Russ and Glenn are two of the best guides ever. Jim and Mel the
owners will take you in just as if you were family. What a great hunt. The
food was also exceptional. I met some great guys from all over the United
States--some of which will stay with me forever. Earl I hope you are
reading this!! Hunting has always put me on Cloud 9, so thank you for a
wonderful trip and I am looking forward to a return trip! One more high
point of the trip was the engraved box call that I won!!! It is top notch
just like Magnum.
Mickey Fortner, AR
Jim,
I would just like to thank you guys for an awesome time me and my son of 16 years had with all of you.
It was a great bonding experience that he and I will have for the rest of our lives.
After leaving your camp I traveled to Nebraska for a Merriam Turkey hunt. The outfitter there did a fine job too.
What separates you guys is the professionalism at ALL levels; lodging, food, knowledgeable guides that do it all for you
from guiding you, teaching you their tricks that make you a better hunter, doing everything it takes to make sure you have the
best shot opportunity and taking care of your game as if it were theirs. I have used you guys in the past, have referred you to
many of my friends and will continue to do so as well. Thanks again Melony for putting together the cd of great photos.
Bob and Bobby Burns, PA
"Thanks once again for hosting such a great hunt. This was my 7th year
returning to Magnum for spring turkey and each year I look forward to it as
if it were my first! Your guides, cooks and yourselves are top notch and
have become my extended family over the years. Once again, thanks and I
look forward to next year. Enclosed find my contract and deposit for 2008
and a cd of pictures from this past season."
Marianne Hosty, NJ
"I just wanted to drop you a line and tell you what a great time Mickey and I
had turkey hunting at "Magnum" this year. We are already planning to come back
next year with a couple of our buddies. I brought mickey down this year to
reward him for the business he had done with me the past year. I don't know
which idea was better, deciding to take him hunting or choosing Magnum Guide Service.
He had the time of his life and that will result in increased sales for me.
What a win/win! Bringing home 3 huge birds didn't hurt things either. All the
guides were eager to help at any time. I enjoyed meeting Russ and Glen especially.
Feel free to use my name as a reference. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone
looking to reward a customer or client."
Gary McCartney, AR
Jim, Melony!
This year I booked one of your new three bird hunts and IT WAS INCREDIBLE!
Three twenty pound plus, limb hangin' long beards!
This marks my 6th year with Magnum bringing my total to TWENTY Toms
harvested since '02!
Only an expert of the highest caliber could achieve such a feat! Of
course,
I'm talking about you Jim, your lovely wife Melony and your expert staff
at
Magnum Guide Service!
Just like last year, upon our arrival at The Finklea we received good news
and bad. The bad news was drought and low or no hatch for the second year
in a row. That meant few, if any, gobbling two year olds running to our
calls. No doubt, in years past, we have been spoiled at this awesome
ranch!
The good news was that the remaining birds were BIG, OLD and SMART with
long
curved hooks and drapery tassel beards! Trophies every one!
In my opinion, Magnum guides, J.P., Gerald and Glenn rank among the finest
in the country and I'm always optimistic when hunting under their
guidance.
But, hey, even if they were just mediocre guides, I'd still hunt with them
because Gerald is such a great cook! Try his Pineapple cream pie. It's
the
bomb.
Bird #1: J.P. suggested the waterhole where I smacked a big Tom last
Easter
Sunday in 102 degree weather. This year was much more pleasant but the
wind
was HOWLING! I pulled out my big, boat paddle box call to cut through the
gusts. At about 4:30 p.m. I thought I heard a gobble, but wasn't sure.
Then, I heard it again, and there was no doubt, it was a big, long, full,
gobble and very very close! He gobbled one more time as he emerged from
some brush about 15 steps to my right. BOOM! And what a bird, 21 lbs. 10
inch beard, 11/2" spurs.
Bird #2: On this hunt I got lost in the pre-dawn starlight and couldn't
find
the blind I built the day before. So, I found a little patch to stretch
out
and wait until the sun climbed high enough to find my way around. I used
my
butt pad on my vest as a pillow and drifted off...
I woke to the sound of clucking and spotted a hen walking straight toward
me! Prone, on the ground, I froze as she passed by about 20 steps to my
left. Finally, I opened my eyes and much to my surprise, spotted a HUGE
TOM
following in her footsteps, but completely fixed on her sexy tail
feathers.
Flat on the ground, I rolled to one side and lifted the gun for an easy 20
yard shot! When I made this little maneuver, he caught my movement and
gave
me a look that said: "Uh oh! KABOOM! Too late! This was my biggest bird
of
the trip, 22lbs, 10 inch beard, long sharp spurs, but most of all, a HUGE
meat head! His neck looked like a stove pipe! A toad!
Bird #3: Possibly my most exciting Texas hunt EVER! This boss Tom was a
long way off when I first heard him gobble on his own. I replaced the box
call with a slate and began to cluck, purr and yelp. No matter how often
he
gobbled I waited at least 15 minutes between calls. This drove him crazy!
He kept gobbling and just like any smart old turkey, he circled around and
came up behind me. RIGHT BEHIND ME and gobbled his waddles off at least
FIFTY TIMES! He was so close, I could hear a deep, bass tone every time
he
gobbled, like a Kicker subwoofer! My fun meter was pegged!
Finally, he grew tired of this stuck up hen and sauntered on by and I
stoned
him at about twenty steps. Deep in my blind, he never saw me.
Another huge bird with oh so long spurs.
But, it was only 4:30 and I was tagged out, so rather than wait for J.P.
to
pick me up in the truck, I picked up my bird, my gun, my bulging vest and
WALKED proudly back to the cabin! And dude, it was a long walk! Upon my
arrival, without a word, Glen opened the cooler and handed me an ice cold
adult beverage. Now, that's Magnum service!
Because I bagged all my Toms in this one special pasture, I have re-named
it
"Dick Cheney Draw" and I'm confident I'll shoot 'em up there again next
year!
You see, unlike ordinary hunters, I have three competitive advantages:
natural athleticism, cat like reflexes and the good judgement to BOOK WITH
MAGNUM GUIDE SERVICE YEAR AFTER YEAR!
So, Jim, Mel, for all you do...God bless...and here is my deposit for next
year!
Sincerely,
Kevin Neathery

"Thanks so much for the photos. Wanted to let you know what a great time I had. Glenn is a top notch guide willing to share his hunting knowledge and techniques with his client. I will be a better turkey hunter for it. All the personnel at the lodge could not have done more to make me feel at home. Good food, good company, and an exceptional hunt. I have been on several guided hunts before and generally know what to expect and I can say that I will book another hunt with Magnum at my first opportunity."
Dorian McIntyre, MS
"Wow, all the ingredients of a perfect hunt. Facilities, food, personnel,
communications and, of course you, our hosts were all great. Your operation
is outstanding for the sportsman. I'm not sure if you knew the trip was a
gift from my son, Ron. Killing our birds just made it perfect for the both
of us. Selecting Magnum Guide Service was great on his part and all of you
guys made it all come together. I will recommend M.G.S. to anyone looking
for a quality guided hunt with all the trimmings. Thanks so much for your
hospitality and of course, the "undergarment".
Earl Haywood, FL
“I wanted to thank you so very much on the hospitality and kindness you shared with our group and most of all the way you made my father feel. The cake you made was awesome and a very special moment for us all. Dad turning 80 appears to give him the notion that he won’t be able to hunt with us next year, but I will work on that. Anyhow, the moments we all shared will and has had a positive impact on us and dad in general. Magnum is a first class operation and you and your staff have consistently made our group welcome. Although we all had no control on the weather, we look forward to another return trip next year.”
Clayton McKendree and friends, FL
“
Greatest facility and people I have ever broken bread with. Magnum Guides,,,,,Melony and her underling Jim:-)) Just in case your wondering,,,,,the Bird,,,,,
Taste Great,,,,,,and was,,,,,less filling-)). The Hunter,,,,,was one happy camper!”
Scott Smith, CA
"Just wanted to drop you a note to tell you how much we all enjoyed our
recent turkey hunt with Magnum! Thanks a lot for a great time and we look
forward to a return trip!"
Randy Sharman, MS
"I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for the wonderful time you showed us in your great state of Texas. The accommodations, your people and the scenery were all first class. We are so thankful that Bobby was able to move to within one bird of the Grand Slam. Hopefully, Cal and Bobby will be able to finish their slams next season in Florida. We are all so blessed to have been able to make the trip to Texas to hunt with you. Tell Jim we are sorry we didn't get to meet him but we realize that a man can only be in one place at a time. Blessings to you in the seasons ahead."
Donald Jarrett, GA
I wanted to say thanks for the great turkey hunting we experienced this
past week. My dad and I both tagged out by 10 AM on the first morning, and
Mr. Mike and Lawson were tagged out by the second afternoon, Unbelievable!
Every time we walked into the lodge Ms. Vicki and Ms. Barbara had a feast
on the table. Your guides, Steve, Greg, Rick, Andres, and Neil were the
best I have ever experienced and the nicest guys you could ever meet!! It
was our first trip to Magnum and it definitely will not be our last.
Thanks again for the time of our lives.

Jim,
Melony!
This year's hunt was just like all the rest: AWESOME!
Four twenty pound plus, limb hangin' long beards and one
heck of a good time! This year marked my 5th year
with Magnum and my 4th double ranch hunt bringing my
total to 17 Toms harvested since 2002.
Bird #1
Things got off to a rip roaring start at the Paxton
Ranch with guide Greg placing me in a proven pasture
filled with HORNY HENS and GOBBLERS GONE WILD! In
the starlight, I built a blind and settled in as birds
began to gobble on the limb about 1/4 mile away. After
that, it was like a dream. A few scrapes on my box call
and before I could set it down, three T-Rex Toms charged
my decoy set-up in full strut gobbling. I singled
out the meat-head with the clear shot and KABOOM, I
stoned him cold with a 4,5 & 7 Heavi Shot Triplex hand
load from Nitro. This bird turned out to be the best of
the trip for me: 23 lbs, 101/2" beard and long,
sharp, 13/8" spurs!
Bird #2
This waterhole monster almost gave me the slip. You
see, I was a little "seepy" from the previous nights'
festivities at the main lodge. Sisters Melony and Wende
prepared a gourmet dinner...and then...the beer and the
wine and some more beer, more wine. So I decided to
take a little afternoon siesta in my blind shaded by a
big, waterhole oak. I awoke to the sound my favorite
alarm clock, a gobbling turkey and maneuvered my barrel
for the shot. It was no problem because the Tom's fan
was so big, it blocked out the afternoon sun. Kaboom!
This "Nap N' Zap" strategy has paid off for me more than
once in Texas. And just in case you're wondering.
Snoring doesn't spook turkeys. In fact, it attracts
them. Trust me.
Bird #3
Now, it was on to the Finklea! All Magnum ranches are
the cream of the crop. And guide J.P. and Chef Gerald
are the best of the best. But, upon our arrival,
we learned hunting had been tough with drought
conditions and record high temperatures. The birds were
quiet and elusive. The first morning, J.P. dropped
me off in Republican Draw where in years past, I could
count on hearing dozens of Toms gobbling their waddles
off. This year, I only heard one. And even though
he was a long way off, he seemed to answer my calls,
cutting me off twice. Then, silence. I almost
gave up on him, when he hammered like holy heck right
behind me. He walked by so close I had to freeze
and let him pass before I popped him at about 35 yards.
Bird #4
Easter Sunday. 102 degrees. I built a new blind by a
waterhole with no shade anywhere. It was so hot, I just
knew a big Tom would stop for a drink on the way to the
roost. If I didn't die from a heat stroke first! It
was so hot, nothing moved or made a sound. Not even a
bug. Fifteen minutes before J.P. was to pick me up, two
hens popped over the levee. Then, from behind, less
than 5 steps from my blind, a big Tom strolled on by.
But, before he could buy the girls a drink, I served him
a Nitro cocktail, knocking him over the levee in cloud
of hevi-shot dust. At that moment I knew: "tough"
hunting with Magnum Guide Service is still THE BEST!
And my '06 hunt was just like all the rest! AWESOME!
So, Jim, Melony, take care, God bless and here is my
deposit for next year! Sincerely,
Kevin
Neathery, AR
"First,
let me tell you how much we enjoyed the hunt down there
the week of April 3! It was our first time in Texas,
and I cannot say enough good things about the experience
you provided. The three of us got four nice birds ( I
had one catch and release). My Rio had almost 1.5"
spurs (my longest ever) - he is getting mounted. Oh by
the way, my taxidermist applauded how well the
birds were handled when he received them. We got all
the kills (and the miss) on video which made it that
much more special. You have a first class operation and
we plan to return soon. I would recommend it to anyone.
I sent Donnie a copy of our video tape - you may want to
watch it.
While we were there, Donnie mentioned you are testing
out a Montana ranch for a potential Merriam's hunt. My
group wants to do a Merriam's hunt next year. I have an
outfitter in Montana already identified (have not
booked), but based on the experience we had in Texas, I
feel you would also offer a great experience. Please
let me know how your hunt goes, and what the prospects
are for a Magnum Merriam's hunt next year. Our
Merriam's contingency is most likely to come back to
Texas - those Rio's are a blast! I won't do anything
until I hear from you. Good luck on your hunt and keep
me posted." Thanks! Mike
Morrell, VA
"I have been a very pleased
client of Magnum Guide Service since 1999. I have
booked Spring turkey hunts with Jim and Melony every
consecutive year since 1999 and my nephew, Kevin, and I
are booked to return to the Finklea Ranch in Spring
2007. I only turkey hunt and as such I have on few
occasions used another outfitter much to my
disappointment. My expectations are high and the
professional Magnum Guide Service staff and guides, in
particular J.P. and Gerald, always come through with
results. I have been turkey hunting since 1982 in
Louisiana, and I have been fortunate to harvest my four
largest and highest point NWTF turkeys on Magnum Guide
Service leased ranches, three of the four on the Finklea
Ranch. This year on Easter Sunday morning I harvested a
24 lb., 11 inch beard with 1 1/4 inch spurs, scoring 71
points, for which I was given the custom-made Magnum
Guide Service box call. I had one previously and it was
the same box call I used to call up that big tom on
Easter Sunday morning.
In closing, I would be amiss not to acknowledge the many
lasting friendships I have made over the years hunting
with Magnum Guide Service, and my nephew and I anxiously
look forward each year to our West Texas Spring Turkey
hunt with J.P. and Gerald, and the memories of
exhilarating, consistent, fast-paced Rio Grande turkey
hunting action."
Sincerely,
Joe Shannon, LA
Sally & I want to thank you
all for a great turkey hunt. The quality of the harvest
was outstanding and, as usual, the accommodations, meals
and camaraderie were, in the consistent Magnum
tradition, of the highest quality. Riley was a great
mentor for Sally, on only her second turkey hunt and she
was most happy with her wonderful trophy tom. (You may
recall that last year, on her very first turkey hunt,
she won the Magnum Box Call for the biggest turkey of
the hunt. What a way to start her turkey hunting
career!!)
Jim provided two birds for Bob, the second of which was
taken in what can only be called a truly "Classic Turkey
Hunt" with the tom and all his hens being called along a
beautiful river bottom into range for the shot. The fact
that the gobbler was a "wide body" at 23 pounds with a
10 1/2 inch beard and 1 1/4 inch spurs was icing on the
cake. It provided Bob with one of his most satisfying
turkey hunting experiences, especially when that big guy
earned this year's Magnum Box Call award for best bird
of the hunt.
We look forward to our next hunt with Magnum and for
many more years of happy outdoor adventures with you
all.
BB & SSS, NM
"Just
a note to let you know this year's hunt was the best
ever! Four years, 13 birds! I substitute "birds" for
"Toms" so I don't have to mention that (very big) Jake I
mistakenly harvested last year. So, technically, four
years, 12 Toms, 1 jake... The
first morning we walked into the pre-built blind and
it was almost too easy! I said almost. My first bird
was a double spurred monster of a lifetime. My second
bird was just HUGE! I nearly messed that hunt up...no, I
did mess that hunt up...you heard the story...but the
waterhole spot was so good, I lucked out and bagged that
final Tom at five minutes 'til seven. It was "all good" when I met up with Greg
and saw he limited out as well! And Jim, thanks for
teaming Greg up with Gary. Greg says he didn't really
need a guide, he would have scored anyway, well maybe,
maybe not..
I'm very proud of the
engraved Magnum box call I won! When I brag about
winning it, I don't mention there were only two other
hunters and one was a total amateur. I leave that part
out. It's beautiful - thank you!
At the Finklea, the
longbeard party roared on. J.P. and Gerald are two of
my very favorite people on earth. Every time I see
them, I smile. Glen is a first rate guide as well. He
has a nice calming influence. He tunes your calls and
shows you little tricks and tips.
The next morning, Glen
dropped me off in "Republican Draw" where I stoned
another huge Tom! Gorgeous, 23 pounds, long spurred,
huge fan, 10 1/2" beard. And I was then tied for the lead
in the contest. That afternoon I counted 13 longbeards
that strolled by my setup in gun range. Thirteen!
That's including the three big ones I ran out of the box
when I walked up. The wind was blowing so hard I just
sneaked up on them with a bush between me and them. I
could have shot them like quail as they burst into
flight, but I didn't want any more body shots, broken
wings…or broken legs. A little risky, I know, but I let
them walk because I didn't want to tag out so early.
Greg struggled and finished day one "birdless", but no
worries, it was just the first day. On morning two I
didn't see a single Tom. So, I said a little prayer and
promised I wouldn't pass on another longbeard. Finally,
at about 2:30 (I missed lunch and stayed in the blind)
my heart skipped a beat when two big'ns sauntered past
and I dropped one. He weighed 21 pounds, 10" beard, 1
1/4" spurs! Beautiful! Even so, he was the smallest bird
on the porch when I arrived.
Later that evening, Greg
rolled in with a sad tale. He missed the biggest turkey
of his life. A huge "25 pounder" with a meat head and a
beard that drug the ground. He said he could see it a
long way off and as it got closer he started to shake
and couldn't control his breathing. Before the woeful
miss, Greg poked fun at some of my shots...you know, the
low ones...he never missed a Tom and prided himself on his
head shots. I told him to aim for the neck where "meat
meets feathers". I told him "a broken wing is better
than a broken heart". Of course, he blamed the miss on
my high dollar Nitro hand loaded Heavy Shot triplex
shells I had given him. He was so obviously bummed, we
all agreed, it was those darn six dollar apiece shells.
But, I'll tell you, that miss made Greg a turkey hunter
for life! He was a wreck that night with only one
morning left to hunt and two tags left. We were all
waiting on the porch when Greg returned Monday morning.
We all cheered when we learned he scored! He bagged
only one bird, but it was HUGE with 1 3/4" spurs! In
triumphant fashion, on the last play of the 4th quarter,
he won the contest, the box call and the money! He paid
me back and then, added the remainder to our tip. This
time he said he aimed a little lower and those Nitro
shells stoned him cold. Awesome!
In conclusion, may I
offer the following observation. Because I study
business for a living, I have learned any business is an
extension of the Owners. And I can't help but notice
the talented employees you attract: JP, Gerald,
Glen, Gary, Greg, Anne, Wende, they are all fantastic!
It is obvious the Owners of Magnum Guide Service are
professionals of the highest caliber and dedicated to
the success of their customers! So, Jim and Melony,
don't go changing! See you next year.

"I
just finally got settled back in after chasing turkeys
for 30 days and wanted to let you know that I did get my
double grand slam in just 22 days. I had a fantastic
time doing it, but wanted you to know that Texas really
smiled on me and I have you and your team to thank for
it.
From the time I got off
the plane with your staff standing there waiting on us I
just knew I was in for a real treat. They were easily
identified by shirts and hats and greeted each of us
with a firm handshake and an introduction. I was very
much impressed with their professionalism and they even
carried our bags for us. The guides wasted no time in
getting to know each of us and made sure all of our
needs were taken care of.
James was especially
helpful during our hunts and worked very hard to be sure
we all got our birds. I heard so many gobblers that it was hard to
stay focused on why I was there. Before Magnum Guide
Service I could have only dreamed of hearing 40 or more
gobblers at one time. After fly down I actually saw 40
mature gobblers strutting at one time...somebody pinch me,
please! It didn't take long for some of them to work
our way. I told my guide I wanted to wait and take 2 with
one shot and he said "OK let's get it done". When I
finally pulled the trigger I had 9 longbeards in full
strut at less than 20 steps and got 2 with one shot.
Absolutely amazing!
As if the hunting isn't
enough, the lodge is just beautiful and the wildlife
mounts throughout are just spectacular. This very
classy lodge still makes you feel comfortable and very
much at home. Cooking by Anne is just unbelievable.
This is not hunting camp food; this is fine dining at
hunting camp. Don’t let her get away. The atmosphere
you provide and reinforced by your entire staff can not
be matched anywhere. In fact I was so impressed I
rebooked for next year before leaving and I am bringing
my son and a friend too.
I can't thank you enough
for the fantastic experience you provided me and for
being part of my Grand Slam trip. Please feel free to
use my letter as a testimonial and to give my name and
number to anyone requesting a reference. See you next
spring!
John H. McCoy, VA
As
usual Magnum Guide Service came through again for me. I
had a terrific time at the Finklea Ranch. The other
hunters were all good natured, seasoned hunters that
knew how to hunt turkeys. JP and Gerald were outstanding
and it was fun being there with them. Glen who mostly
guided me also did a great job getting us on the birds
and out early. Gerald was a hit with his cooking
skills and he kept trying to fill me up. JP and the rest
were right back in September when you guys suggested the
Turkey hunting in south Texas. I would like
to go next year at the same time, however job changes at
work may affect me. Just the same let me know if a hunt
at Finklea is open on the last hunt for '06.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi, Jim and Melony. I got the contracts for next
year's turkey hunts, as well as the shorts. Thanks
very much. I'll get the contracts back pronto. Also,
I just had to tell you and J.P. that coming to Texas
this spring really turned my turkey season around. I
was having all sorts of bad luck before I got to TX
and the Finklea. Boy, have things changed. Once I
hooked up with Magnum, I could hardly sit down without
killing a turkey. I got four with you all in TX (Rob
got two), and I just got back from Missouri and a
quick hunt in Georgia. I killed a monster in
Missouri, and then killed another beauty (4 year old)
in Georgia this morning! Hell, I was just driving
home from Missouri and stopped in Georgia at my
lease. I only had an hour or two to hunt, and was
still successful. So, the lesson is, go to Texas,
hunt with Magnum and J.P., and the good turkey Karma
will stay with you!! Thanks, again, for a great time
and some great hunting. Can't wait for September and
antelope hunting.

What
can I say! WOW!! Much more later, but this is the bird
that James and I got down past #1. He was a big, heavy
bird that Riley thought would go 23 pounds. It was
almost too heavy to hold over my shoulder.
I am thrilled with the
Box Call I won for the biggest gobbler killed on that
hunt. What a treat! I think James will tell you I
earned it. Jim, you would have been proud---call/wait
and watch, spot, stalk, belly crawl, climb up/down
hills, etc. James and I did it all. Two novice turkey
hunters pulled it all together!!!
Our best to you both.

Just wanted to thank you
for the great time over the weekend. I can't remember when I've spent a more
pleasurable three days. It was nice to be able to spend some time hunting
with you, and have you work on correcting my stalking faults!! While I
may not always show it, I had the best time! Good people, good food, great
weather, good properties and the hunting was just challenging enough.
Shooting both birds on the first morning would not have been as much
fun. Having to work for both of them made it more special!
Jay Gilchrist, MD
"I wish to take this opportunity to thank you,
Anne, and guides Greg and Gary, for making me feel welcome during my
hunt with you. Kevin and Greg added to the pleasure. At first, I was
hesitant to make the trip, but then realized it to be a once in a lifetime
experience I could not pass up. The hunt exceeded my wildest expectations.
I’ve only seen turkeys in the wild twice before, but nothing like I
experienced in west Texas. I'm still having thoughts about all I did wrong
when trying to get my second turkey. Once again, thanks for a hunt that I
will never forget."
Mike Sumner, TX
We wanted you to know
that, once again, Magnum Guide Service has provided us
with a most pleasant experience and a lot of new happy
memories during our turkey hunt at your Palo Duro Canyon
Ranch. As you know well, Magnum has provided us both
with many "firsts" in the sport of hunting and this was
yet another....Sally's first turkey hunt. Had we
written a script and forwarded it to you to fulfill, it
could not have turned out any better. Riley guided Bob
to a setup the first morning where he was able to
harvest two fine gobblers about five minutes apart while
he sat in the same spot! Surely if there's a part of
Heaven reserved for turkey hunters, it must be something
like that! James was downright determined that
Sally was going to get her first bird and he spared no
effort to bring that about. Not only did she get her
first and second birds, hers were the two biggest Toms
taken by anyone on the hunt. Now, there was one happy
lady and a new life-long turkey hunter! Gerald did
his usual fine job of providing delicious and abundant
food for all to enjoy. As always, the accommodations
were clean and comfortable. It is always easy to
say nice things about Magnum because you always earn it.
BB & SSS,NM
"We truly enjoyed our trip
to Texas, it was a wonderful hunting adventure with
Magnum. That's why we are coming back! Everyone was like
family and were great team players."
Lee & Becky Thompson, OH
"Well, Dave and I just finished another fine spring
gobbler hunt with you folks at the Finklea Ranch. It
turned out to be one of the best hunts ever! I managed to
call in two Toms on Saturday morning and killed a 19 pound
gobbler. Then on Saturday afternoon, with some help from
John Little calling, I managed to kill my largest bird
ever, 23 pounds! What a thrill it was. You folks run a
tight ship and JP kept everything running smoothly as
usual. Gerald's cooking did wonders for my cholesterol
too! All joking aside, I would and have highly recommended
you folks to any of my friends looking for a great value
and experience. What keeps me coming back are the people
you employ. They are a credit to you and your fine
organization. Best wishes for your continued success."
Dan Flynn, PA
"I wanted to thank you again for the turkey hunt last
month. It was a fine start to my spring that included 6
states. I will definitely be back someday and have been
spreading the word about your company. I found every
aspect of Magnum to be top notch including the hunting
areas, meals, lodging and other accommodations and
sacrifices that you made. The state lottery here is 100
million and I told my wife if I win that I would book your
whole lodge (15-17 hunters) for a 3 day hunt and bring
friends. That would become an annual event each year.
Hopefully, I’ll be so lucky. Thanks again."
Bob Badger, PA
"My father and I enjoyed our hunt more than you can
imagine. It was dad's 78th birthday gift. The memories we
experienced together will always be special. Thanks to you
and Jim. JP was an awesome guide and a pleasure to be
around. Thank you."
Clayton
McKendree, FL
"I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my turkey
hunt with you last month. The staff there were all
outstanding at feeding us and helping us get our birds. I
have hunted turkeys in Missouri for over 30 years and have
had many outstanding hunts. The experiences I had in Texas
top them all. It has been a long time since I encountered
so many adult birds and the gobbling was terrific. I also
wanted to thank you for answering my questions regarding
hunting opportunities in Alaska. I certainly hope to hunt
with you again. You have a wonderful operation that
provides first class service."
Michael Fiehler, MO
"Just a note to tell you that the boys and I had a great
time hunting and staying at the Main Lodge. The food was
excellent and the staff bent over backwards to help us in
every way. Truly a first class operation! We all look
forward to doing this again real soon. Thank you."
Jeff Foote, Sr., AR
"Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know what a
great time we had on our turkey hunt. As like last time,
the food was wonderful and turkeys abundant. Can't tell
you enough how great Wayne was with our group.
We all agreed that the next trip we have to be in camp
where Melony is cooking and Wayne is our guide.
Thanks again for a great couple of days. We will be back
sometime soon and looking forward to it."
Jeff Jamerson, MI
"I had a great hunt, as always. You all really know how to
put a hunt together. My first bird was the heaviest turkey
I have ever killed at 25 pounds. He was a real monster! I
will be back for opening weekend 2005."
Bob Karel, FL
"Your guys are great! Just wanted to drop a quick note to
say I made it home safe and sound. I can't say enough
about the hospitality. Melony's wonderful cooking (the
only place I think I have ever been that I walked many
miles and still gained 5 pounds!), the awesome landscape
in Amarillo, and loads of gobblers! You made us all feel
like old time friends and family and that demonstrates the
character you two have, which is second to none. Thanks
again and look forward to seeing all of you again one day
soon."
Chip Stokes, SC
"Thanks for the nice card and photos. We had a huge big
time with ya'll on our recent turkey hunt and we really
look forward to seeing you both in December when we come
for our whitetail hunt. Have a fun and safe summer!"
Danny & Lisa Gray, MS
"Once again, Ron and I had a great trip to the Finklea.
The amount of birds was outstanding. In 4 hunts we had 35
toms within 30 yards and killed some super birds. Ron's
first bird had an 11" beard with 1 1/4" spurs and weighed
24 pounds. Both of mine had 10 1/2" with one bird also
weighing 24 pounds. Next year we are both returning and I
am bringing 3 more friends. Thanks and good luck on your
upcoming hunts."
Steve Anderson, LA
"Just a note to say thanks! The Askew Ranch is loaded with
birds. I brought 2 Toms in to the decoys by 7:00 a.m. the
first morning. What a hunt! I want to give a special
thanks to Glen, Steve and Russ for all the work they
put in. Our guide went the extra mile for Jeff, and because of
that he ended up with 2 birds. If you ever need a
reference, please do not hesitate to call."
Jeremy Dersham, WI
"I just returned from turkey hunting on the Finklea Ranch
and want to thank you for running such a quality
operation. Gerald, JP and Glen were wonderful hosts and
went out of their way to make sure that everyone in our
group had an enjoyable hunt. In spite of less than ideal
weather, all but one person in our group harvested two
turkeys. This is the most fun that I have had in over 20
years of hunting turkeys. The trip was everything that I
hoped it would be. We are in the process of rebooking for
2005."
Griff Gleason, TN
"I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time we
had last weekend turkey hunting the Williams/Wilson
Ranches. You have an awesome staff! They were very helpful
and courteous and most of all a lot of fun to be around.
Everything was first class. The food and accommodations
were excellent. Melony, you and your Mom are great cooks.
It is very hard to cook for large groups, but you made it
look easy, not to mention how good everything tasted. My
brother and I are avid deer and duck hunters, but have
only been turkey hunting a couple of times with our Dad,
who is crazy about turkey hunting. It was great for both
of us to bag our first turkeys with our Dad being there. I
believe we are both hooked. Thanks again for the great
time. We will definitely be coming back."
Jeff Foote, Jr., LA
"Well, it seems I just can't go wrong hunting with you!
Boy, what a trip. Our second hunt together starts with two
great Rio Grande turkeys, then asked what else can I do
while there? Set my goals - and you deliver. I filled the
sheep and goat slams, and then you set me up with one of
the most sought after big game animals, the Addax. Not
just an animal, but the potential new #5 Trophy Game
Records of the World Record, which completed the super
slam of exotics. The ranch, guide, owner, taxidermist
and others are all elated, what a beautiful
trophy! I cannot wait until I join you in August for our
Alaska hunt. What pleasures await me are great
expectations. Please use me as a reference."

Turkey one for books
Jacksonville man
fells big Rio Grande bird with twice the normal
number of spurs.
By
JOE JULAVITS, The Times-Union
When Jacksonville's Major Harding shot a
Rio Grande-subspecies wild turkey earlier this
month in Texas, he walked over to examine the bird
and did a double take. Make that a quadruple take.
"When I turned that
sucker over, I said, "What am I looking at?'''
Harding said.
Instead of the
normal two spurs, one on each leg, Harding's
gobbler had four. They measured 1 5/8-inches, 1
1/2, three-quarters and five-eighths.
Harding, a
long-time hunter, had heard about, but never seen,
a multiple-spurred turkey. And not only was his
gobbler special in terms of spurs, it weighed a
whopping 25 pounds and sported a 12 3/4-inch
beard. A rare bird, indeed.
A taxidermist in
Texas confirmed that, based on the National Wild
Turkey Federation scoring system, the bird will be
the No.2 non-typical in the multiple spur category
in the country.
"That was pretty
cool," Harding said.
The NWTF uses a
points system to score turkeys that is similar to
the Boone & Crockett scoring system for deer.
Total spur length, beard length and weight are the
factors in determining the score.

Major
Harding shot this 25-pound Rio Grande turkey
near Sonoma, Texas. The turkey weighed 25
pounds and sported a 12 3/4-inch beard, both
bigger than usual.

|
Harding bagged the bird on April 2, opening day of
spring gobbler season in Texas. He and his
17-year-old son, Kyle, make an annual trip to
Sonoma, Texas, to hunt on the Finklea Ranch.
Father and son
set up in a pasture that morning, tucked up
against some small oak trees and facing their
decoy spread.
"We probably
heard 15 or 20 different gobblers on the roost --
I'm not exaggerating," Harding said. "I love
hunting those Rios because they just love to
gobble."
At 7:30 a.m.,
two mature gobblers came in.
"We were going
to try and double up on them," Harding said. "This
one bird broke off, and I had a very narrow
opening and I took it."
Harding dropped
the bird at a distance of about 28 yards.
"Kyle said,
'Gee, Dad, you could have waited,''' Harding said.
"But he wound up killing two nice gobblers later
in the trip."
Jim Roche of
Magnum Guide Service, who put the trip together,
said Harding's gobbler was the equivalent of
shooting a 200-class Boone & Crockett whitetail.
"It's the bird
of a lifetime -- that's what everybody's telling
me," Harding said. "It was incredible." |

"Another great hunt with a great group of guys. You all continue to amaze me with the consistent excellence of your operation. Every year, on every hunt, you all are the exemplar professionals. Before the hunt, during and after, Magnum is the best. Thanks for everything. I will never forget my big, six yard Tom! He had one spur that was 1 3/8". Never had one that close before. My second bird is a prize also. J.P. and Gerald were fantastic! They were both so helpful and responsive and the food was really special this year. They make it easy to want to come back."
Bob Karel, FL
"On behalf of John and myself, we both would like to thank you very much for a fantastic experience! You both, as well as your entire staff made for an exceptional and memorable Texas Turkey Hunt. A trip that must be done again, and a hunting trip we will encourage fellow hunters, friends and associates to experience. Everything, and we mean virtually everything was done 1st class, outstanding and enjoyable. We both share a special thanks to Liz, Harold and Steve for the Jones Lodge hunt. Liz can really cook'em up and made us both feel very "at home" during our stay, while both Harold and Steve were tremendous in educating us both on the finer points of hunting the birds. Once again, we thank Magnum Guide Service very much for all your hospitality and support for a wonderful and memorable experience!"
Matthew Matlak, Maryland & John Matlak, PA
"Just wanted you to know what a great time we had hunting with you. The hunt in the Palo Duro Canyon was beyond description. There cannot be a more beautiful place to hear a turkey gobble. I would advise anyone who has not had the opportunity to hunt Texas to put this trip on his or her list of things not to miss. Watching my eight-year-old take his first turkey and my thirteen-year-old kill not one, but two trophy turkeys was among my greatest experiences. Put me down for next year, I will not miss it."
Mark Yarborough, MS
"I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the hospitality I felt during my stay the first week of April, 2003. I am highly recommending to me fellow hunters that they also book their next hunt with Magnum Guide Service. Please tell Liz and Velma that I could not have had any better food anywhere, except at home, of course! Their finesse in the kitchen is definitely an asset to the experience as a whole. The guides, Harold, Steve, Neil and Wayne were very professional and extremely helpful in making our hunt enjoyable and successful. Their expertise and willingness to go the extra mile made the difference between having a good hunt and having a great hunt. Once again, thank you Jim and Melony for bringing together all the ingredients necessary to provide such a wonderful experience. I am looking forward to my next hunt with you and your group in the near future."
Tony Smith, NC
"I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much my son and I enjoyed our trip to the "Tres Coyotes Ranch" the first weekend of April, 2003. The turkey hunting was great (we both used all tags) and our host, Dennis was terrific. Dennis went out of his way to make everything about the trip enjoyable and successful. Many thanks."
Richard Miller, FL
"Just a little note to say thanks for a great time and turkey hunt in Texas. We hunted the first week of the season at the Finklea Ranch. The hospitality and service provided by J.P. and Gerald was exceptional. As there were five of us hunting, everyone was extremely pleased with the entire hunt. Thanks again for an outstanding adventure."
Marty Sanford, MS
"I just wanted to drop a note to the both of you to thank you so much for the wonderful hunt and Dave and I had last week. Liz and Harold were truly exceptional hosts. Dave and I arrived early afternoon of the day before our hunt and had the opportunity to spend a few hours scouting with Harold before the remaining guests arrived. The number of turkeys we saw was incredible; not to mention all of the Rio's hanging around the ranch! Liz's cooking was wonderful. The mesquite-grilled steaks were absolutely delicious and the baked potato was one of the biggest I've ever seen. Usually I like to lose a few pounds on my hunting adventures. Not so on this trip. It was a real thrill to see and hunt your part of our great country and the State of Texas. I will definitely be back. Somewhere in Florida is an Osceola turkey with my name on it. After that, I do plan on returning as the warmth and hospitality of your staff is exceptional. Not to mention, all the Rio Grande Turkeys! Thank you so much."
Mike Saenz, MI
"I just got back from the Finklea Ranch last night and cannot begin to tell you what a great time we had. You have an extremely well run operation with a super staff, great accommodations and more turkeys that I have ever seen in my life! Gerald’s cooking topped it off to make this one of the finest hunting weekends I can recall in my hunting career. Thanks again for a great hunt."
Bob Chain, MS
"What else can we say but, Wow! Your hospitality is unmatched. We both look forward to next year. Jim, what a play toy, the airplane ride to Brady was great. Please accept this gift as a small token of our appreciation. Thank you."
Mark Beatty, TX
"Thanks for making my nephew, Kevin, and my hunt such a pleasurable and fulfilling experience. This was my fifth consecutive year contracting my spring turkey hunt with Magnum Guide Service. All were past successes and this current Spring 2003 hunt bringing my nephew for his first Texas Rio hunt, a family tradition has begun whereby Kevin will join me on all my future hunting trips to West Texas. Kevin harvested two double-bearded gobblers on Easter morning and afternoon, and was awarded a beautiful handcrafted box call made by Magnum Guides, Russ and Glen. Kevin and I enjoyed our trip immensely. We were both treated with superb cuisine, compliments of Gerald's quality rated cooking. We have booked our Rio hunts for next spring 2004 and plan to renew our pleasant acquaintances and everlasting friendships with J.P., Gerald, Glen, Ron and fellow hunting companions."
Joe Shannon, LA
"Thought you would enjoy our video of the spring turkey hunt. I have hunted all over the country as part of the Quaker Boy Pro Staff, but coming out there with my 11 year old son, Daniel, was fantastic. As you know, he harvested 2 mature birds, ones weighing in at 25 lbs.! We were treated and fed great. Seeing the excitement in Daniel's face, I can tell you this was the hunt I've been waiting all my life for. Thanks again. Can't wait until next spring."
Dan Thomas, TN
"To everyone at my first turkey hunt: Everything they say about Texas is true. Good times, nice people and great sport. Thanks for a great time."
Margaret Folgore, NJ
"I want to tell you how much I enjoyed our time together last week. I think you all have a first class operation and know how to treat someone first class. I want you to know that I am very appreciative of our new friendship and already I'm looking towards next year when I shall return."
Dane Wiendorf, Hamburg, AR
"I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful time I had, in fact, everyone did. Sarah wants to move to Texas. Your graciousness and hospitality were superb. And of course getting the 2 turkeys was the icing on the cake. Looking forward to seeing you all again."
Gloria Blumig, NJ
"Just a note to let you know my husband and son have talked of nothing else but the good time they had on their spring turkey hunt in Texas! Mike and Barry went on the hunt as Barry's graduation present and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Barry hasn't let his dad forget he missed a couple of shots, but that just added to the fun and memories. I have to admit their talk about the hunt is sprinkled with as much admiration of Gerald's cooking as it is with their great hunting experience. Thanks to Bobby, Donnie and Gerald for taking care of my men so well. Thanks again for helping us give Barry a great graduation present!"
Cindi Baxter, TN
"Thanks for the greatest hunt I've ever had. It really didn’t hit me until I was on the plane home.
I had 15 longbeards in shooting range during a day and a half hunting. It would probably take 10 years in Tennessee to see that many birds! The Jones Ranch, food and hospitality were exquisite. Looking forward to next spring and bringing my son."
Tim Agee, TN
"Thanks again for such a wonderful time this past spring. We always enjoy hunting with you, whether we get birds or not (which is usually not the case). The hospitality of you, Melony and your staff is always genuine and appreciated. Despite my ribbing, you are in fact, our favorite hunt."
Cathy Blumig, NJ
"I just had to write and say thanks again for making 9 hunters from Hohenwald, TN's dreams come true. I would say the still morning on the final day after all the strong winds, we probably heard 50 plus gobblers in 3 locations. Any turkey hunter from anywhere needs to hear what West Texas gobbling sounds like on a clear, still, Texas morning. It is unbelievable. Also, thanks to Gerald, Donny and Bobby for being great company, great food and great hunting."
Kevin Hinson, TN
"I
was just trying to figure out the number of hunts I’ve
taken with you. I think I'm well into double digits
now, starting with the New Mexico antelope hunt several
years ago, with this spring's turkey hunt being the most
recent. In between there has been any number of Texas
whitetail/javelina hunts, mule deer/aoudad hunts in
Amarillo, exotic hunts, predator hunts, and turkey
hunts.
This
year's turkey hunt reinforces why I continue to hunt
with Magnum Guide Services. The ranches you hunt have
the game, you’ve got great lodging facilities, great
food, and the people I meet hunting with Magnum are
great – both the guides and the other hunters. I
particularly appreciate your organization and
administration. It is so nice to have all the details
of the trip, including contracts, well in advance. I
know what to expect, and have learned that I can expect
the same great service every time, no matter what I am
hunting with Magnum.
There is nothing like West Texas ranch country in the
Spring. Coming down there and hunting with warm
temperatures, blue sky, green grass and trees, songbirds
singing, and turkey's gobbling - it just doesn't get any
better! I particularly enjoyed being able to hunt with
Jim again this year and take two birds. There is
nothing like having him critiquing your stalking
ability! Fortunately, I always make the shot when I'm
with him, so he can't critique too much!
Thank you for the great times/memories. I look forward
to many more years of enjoyable hunts with you and
Magnum."
