Alaskan Bear Hunt FAQs
When is the best time to hunt bears in Alaska?
Alaska offers two primary bear seasons each year—spring and fall—though regulations vary by hunting unit. Unit 9, located on the Alaska Peninsula and known for producing trophy-class bears, is open during the spring of even-numbered years and the fall of odd-numbered years. Unit 17, another area where we conduct hunts, does not have a closed season. Currently, we focus most of our efforts on spring hunts, which typically produce the largest bears. During the spring rut, mature boars are actively searching for sows, increasing hunter opportunity. This time of year also offers excellent hide quality, as bears have recently emerged from hibernation with long, full fur.
What gear should I bring?
Alaska demands serious preparation, so coming properly equipped is critical to both comfort and success. Hunters should plan on bringing a dependable large-caliber rifle that’s sighted in and ready for longer shots, along with quality optics and protective cases for travel. Durable, waterproof clothing is essential, including rain gear, insulated layers, and reliable boots or waders suited for wet, rugged terrain. You’ll also want a good sleeping system, headlamp, knives, and basic field gear for extended time in remote country.
Because weather conditions can change quickly, layering is key—everything from lightweight base layers to heavy outerwear should be considered. Personal items, medications, and travel essentials like licenses, documentation, and cash for incidentals are also important to have organized before arrival.
We provide a detailed packing list after booking, but the goal is simple: come prepared for wet conditions, variable temperatures, and long days in the field, and you’ll be set up for a successful hunt.
Are the hunts physically demanding?
Yes, bear hunts can be physically challenging. Hunters should be prepared for rugged terrain and variable weather conditions. It is well advised that hunters engage in some sort of physical fitness routine a few months proceeding their hunt.
Can I combine a bear hunt with other species?
Yes, combination hunts are often possible during the fall season. In the spring, depending on the specific hunting area and current regulations, hunters may also have the opportunity to harvest a wolf. Contact us for more details.
