Javelina/Wild Hog Hunt FAQs
What’s the best time of year for javelina and wild hog hunting in Texas?
Honestly, when you have a feral hog invasion you never want to turn anyone away that can help you sort out the problem! Thanks to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department wild feral hogs can be hunted year round with no hunting license required. Obviously the summers in Texas are hot so more hunters lean toward hunting them in the fall, winter or early spring. Javelina can be hunted year round in the counties we hunt them in. They are considered a game animal with a bag limit of up to two pigs annually and can only be hunted during daylight hours. Since most hunters want to mount one for their trophy room the best time to hunt them is in the cooler months of the fall & winter when their hair is longer and the white collar against their black/grey body is more visible around their shoulders, thus the name Collared Peccary.
What is the weather like?
Fall hunting for javelina & wild feral hogs is usually very mild. The winter hunts can be cool to cold. Please keep in mind that January & February are the coldest months in Texas. Most everyone has an Iphone making it so easy to monitor the weather prior to any outdoor excursion. I recommend monitoring the weather a week in advance of your departure and pack accordingly. You can always tweak it as needed before departing your home for Texas. Spring hunts are much like fall hunts being mild. Any nighttime hunt will of course be a little cooler and it’s always a good idea to plan for a little rain even in Texas.
What gear do you recommend?
Camouflage is always a good idea because wild hogs can see better than people think. Javelina on the other hand have poor eyesight but that doesn’t mean that any deer in the area won’t snort and ruin your stalk. Wearing clothing that is quiet is a must because both hogs & javelina have pretty good hearing along with a good sense of smell. Anyone wanting to night hunt for wild hogs should bring their thermal scoped rifles or plan in advance to rent one of ours. Wear darker colored clothing at night but does not have to be camouflage. We do recommend snake boots for that added peace of mind in thick brush or tall grass. While most folks think of snakes they also work for cactus! Binoculars, range finder, flashlight and maybe a small backpack to keep everything together is a good idea. Boots with good ankle support are recommended when hunting hogs with dogs because of the fast pace running over rock and jumping over brush. If you would like to bring your own knife we recommend something with at least a 9 inch blade otherwise you can use one of ours. Bowhunters usually come very prepared, shot distances normally span from 20-40 yds. Please let us know in advance your plans for handling the meat and trophies. Wild feral hogs will vary in size with most from 60-200 lbs, however large boars may reach 300 lbs! Please come prepared with enough gun! In contrast, javelina weigh only 40-60 lbs and a smaller centerfire caliber rifle should work just fine with minimal hide damage.
What is included/not included in the hunt package?
Airport transfers to either the San Angelo, TX or Laredo, TX airports according to whichever ranch is being hunted. Food, lodging, guide, and basic trophy care. Not included is your hunting license usually about $48 for non-residents, gratuities for staff, any travel not included in the afore mentioned, meat processing and or taxidermy.
Travel tips?
Truthfully traveling with firearms on major airlines is pretty straightforward but hunters who would rather not we have firearms for rent along with the necessary ammunition. Don’t wait until the last minute to make a plan for handling your meat and trophies. Give us a call so we can help.
Are there any other hunting opportunities?
With advance planning, Javelina & Wild Hog Hunts can normally be combined with Predator & Exotic Hunting. In some instances dove and or deer season may be open too!
Do you offer Youth Discounts?
Yes we do! We offer a 10% Youth Discount to kids 16 yr and younger if requested at the time of booking.
I have seen cheaper hog hunts advertised, why hunt with you?
That is a fair question. We have 40 yrs under our belt as Magnum Guide Service and well received as one of the leading guide services in the State of Texas. Besides that we are a fulltime guide service which means our hunters have been successful enough over 4 decades that we do not need or have time for a second job. Our staff is very professional, attentive to our hunters needs and experienced in what they do. On top of that we have some of the very best cooks and comfortable lodging. Both our fleet of trucks and ATV’s & UTV’s are all newer models as are most of our hunting blinds, wildlife feeders and custom high racks. No junk here! Our clientele is deserving of the best and we strive to provide just that!
