Turkey Hunt FAQs
When is the best time to hunt Rio Grande Gobblers?
Hunting at the beginning of the season has it’s ups and downs. The up side is being one of the first hunters of the season. The down side is mature birds may still be “henned up” in larger flocks making them difficult to call away from the real thing. Additionally the weather can be quite cool as some years spring is slow to arrive.
Mid season is a balance between fewer gobblers being henned up and those that are fired up and ready to advance to a hunters calls.
Late season is a time when spring is normally in full bloom. The temperatures have warmed up, even hot and hens begin tending more to their nests ignoring the gobblers. The mature gobblers have bred the majority of the hens and are actively searching for any remaining hens to breed. This is a time when some of the oldest gobblers are harvested.
What’s the difference between semi guided and fully guided hunts?
On the semi guided turkey hunts, which represents 65% of all our turkey hunters, you are hunting the same great ranches as the guided hunters. You are staying at the same comfortable lodge, eating the same delicious meals and enjoying the same great service. The only difference is you are doing your own calling. The guides will share all of their collective knowledge of the area to be hunted along with their years of experience hunting Rio Grande Turkeys. Our hunter’s success is a Team effort!
Can I book a hunt for just myself or do I need to be part of a group?
Absolutely! While 75% of our hunters come in various size groups, the remainder are single hunters who often times come alone or elect to bring their wives or girlfriends as non-hunters.
Are non-hunters welcome?
Yes, they certainly are but it is based upon availability at our lodge where we provide private and comfortable lodging for all of our lady hunters & non-hunters alike!
What are the most productive hunting methods for Rio Grande Gobblers?
After a delicious “full” breakfast, and well before “first light,” our staff of expert guides escort both “semi-guided” and “fully-guided” hunters into the field. Hunters are placed within “calling distance” of both roost, strut zone, and feeding areas where they will be free to “run and gun” or “sit and stick” depending upon each hunter’s preference. Hunters are checked on mid-day whereby delicious, made to order, pack lunches are distributed, birds collected, photographed and placed in coolers. Hunters can then either hunt the same area or be moved to a fresh area for the afternoon hunt. Our hunters enjoy the privacy and luxury of having 300-1000 acres exclusively to themselves for each morning and afternoon hunt. If some hunters wish to return to the lodge mid-day we will try and accommodate them. Hunting “pairs” such as husband/wife, father/son, friend/friend will be accommodated.
What options do I have for handling my meat and trophies?
We will fillet the breast meat from each bird then freeze it in leak proof bags. Hunters may choose to bring ice chests or they can donate the meat. Hunters may take they tailfeathers, beards and spurs with them or if they choose to have a life size mount, we will freeze the bird and either transport it to a reputable taxidermist or ship it directly to your taxidermist of choice for an additional fee.
Would you recommend this hunt for youth, ladies and or families?
100% we would! Springtime is a beautiful time to be outdoors with your wife and kids. The weather is typically mild and the thrill of hearing the gobbling of an inbound “Tom Turkey” is hard to beat! Kids like action and turkey hunting provides just that! Most ladies do not have a problem shooting a beautiful bird like a Texas Rio Grande Gobbler!
Is there anything else to hunt after I fill out on my turkeys?
Our first priority is to each and every turkey hunter in camp. Should the opportunity present itself, there may an option to hunt exotic big game such as; axis deer, blackbuck antelope or scimitar oryx. Predator hunts are generally not an option during turkey season.
