Safari Texas-Style

Year-round Exotic Big Game Hunting!

Magnum Guide Service has guided more than a thousand successful exotic hunts, with the vast majority of trophies qualifying for the Safari Club International record book. Our seasoned guides—some of whom are Professional Hunters from Africa—bring decades of experience and expert judgment to every hunt. We hold exclusive access to several Hill Country properties, giving our hunters access to healthy herds and mature trophies.

Our staff of Professional Hunters utilize 4WD vehicles including trucks, UTV’s & ATV’s and hunt primarily safari style until herds of game are spotted. After locating and determining whether or not an animal is mature and of trophy quality, a careful stalk can then be attempted into comfortable shooting range. Our guides will set up their “safari style” shooting sticks for our hunters to rest their rifles on and after that, it’s up to our hunters to make the shot. Nothing like the thrill of the hunt!

“I wanted to thank you again for the amazing adventure during our recent Eland hunt. We have shared many amazing adventures together throughout the years, but the sight of that first huge herd of free ranging Eland moving through the brushy, mountainous terrain was most breathtaking. I never expected to see anything like that outside of Africa.”

Bob Sewell, LA

“This was Africa in America. No African P.H. has anything on you. We were on a hugely expansive ranch with free ranging game. Seeing so many different herds of animals was a thrill.”

Lew Miller, TX

“I just got home a couple of hours ago and looked at the pictures again. I am so fortunate to have the chance to harvest an animal of this quality. I will remember this trip as long as I live.”

Stacy Thomas, NM

Texas Exotic Hunt Rates

Trophy fees and daily rates can vary based on ranch location, species, and current market conditions. The exotic market has seen significant inflation since 2020, but there’s great news on the horizon.

Prices first spiked when hunters spent large amounts of COVID stimulus money, followed by the devastating 2021 winter freeze in Texas that killed thousands of exotics and reduced inventories. Recent concerns over CWD in a few isolated whitetail populations led many landowners to then shift from raising whitetail to exotics since they remain unregulated by the state. As more ranches add to the statewide exotic population, prices are beginning to come down.

Our hunts take place on both free-range, low-fence properties and high-fence ranches that still offer a true fair-chase experience across vast acreage. After decades of flooding in the Texas Hill Country that tore down countless fences, free-ranging herds—such as axis deer—are now thriving. We encourage you to give us a call so that we may discuss in detail what kind of safari we can offer you!

Texas Exotic Hunt FAQs

When is the best time to hunt exotics?

While exotics can be hunted year round, there are certain times that may be more favorable than others depending upon the species pursued. For instance, you can hunt blackbuck antelope in the summer when they are more brown/white or in the winter months when they are more black/white. Scimitar don’t change color and they are true horned animals so they may be hunted year round yet antlered exotic game such as axis, fallow deer, red deer etc. shed their antlers once a year. The best time to hunt fallow deer starts in late August whereas axis bucks may be in velvet, hard horn or recently shed at anytime of the year.

Do exotics taste as good as people claim?

The answer is almost 100% yes however aoudad sheep along with some other sheep species are not too preferred. Any of the African antelope and most animals native to India are delicious and should be considered excellent table fare.

What else can be hunted in addition to exotics?

Because you can hunt exotics year round it is very easy to combine exotics with; whitetail, hogs, turkeys, predators etc.

What is the best method for hunting exotics?

Spot & stalk is very popular. This is where you traverse a ranch in some sort of all terrain vehicle until game is spotted. Then hunter and guide can exit the vehicle in hopes of getting a closer shot. Hunting from blinds near waterholes and wildlife feeders is also popular especially for bow hunters. One of the newest and most exciting ways to hunt giant axis bucks is at night using thermal scopes and suppressors, especially during the rut when they are most vocal. These bucks tend to be very active at night when it’s cool, especially during the hot summer months when most of the breeding occurs. When the herd bucks are calling their doe it can be heard from great distances, betraying the bucks location. Hunter and guide can then stalk in close under the cover of darkness and take the shot with most being under 100 yds.

Can I combine an exotic trophy hunt with a meat hunt?

Absolutely you can. We have more and more hunters coming to take home more than just a set of horns, they come for delicious organic meat.

Why should I hunt some of these species in Texas versus say South Africa?

I love going on safari in Africa. There is nothing quite like it and I recommend to anyone and everyone GO on safari and experience it! Having said that, there are some species that are no longer huntable in Africa or India such as; blackbuck, dama gazelle, scimitar etc. Other species may be hunted both in Africa and in Texas. It is simply personal preference on how much traveling you are willing to do. Atlanta to Johannesburg is a 15 hour non-stop flight, and there’s simply no getting around it. For those interested in going on safari in South Africa we can help you plan it out since we hunt there almost every year.

Would you recommend an exotic hunt for beginning hunters?

Absolutely I would. You only pay the daily fee and nothing more until an animal is harvested. This relieves a lot of pressure. Generally, hunters will have multiple opportunities so if something doesn’t pan out there may be another opportunity just around the corner.
